10 of my favorite comic book covers

4.20.2010 | My Blog

Wolverine #1When I started reading comic books again three years ago (after a 12-year hiatus), I promised myself I wouldn’t get back into collecting single issues and would only buy trade paperbacks. It just didn’t seem financially reasonable to pay $4 per issue and I had so much reading to catch up on that it only made sense to read trades. The one thing I really do miss about buying single issues was getting to check out each new cover when going to the comic book shop! So, I thought it’d be fun to go back through my totally random comic collection that has sat in boxes since the early 90s and try to pick out some of my favorite covers from back in the day. Check out the list after the jump.

1. Wolverine #1 Everyone loves Wolverine and this cover is a perfect representation of what Wolvie’s all about: being a bad-ass.

2. Marvels #1 Seeing Alex Ross’ artwork for the first time in this collection totally blew my mind.

Marvels

3. Superman (vol. 2) #75 I, of course, do not have my copy of this still in the sealed black sleeve. But, if I did, I’d be missing out on this awesome cover! Look at that cape. Brutal.

Death of Superman

4. X-Factor #24 Archangel has always been one of my favorites. Also, I love the composition of the characters on the page here.

X Factor #24

5. The Maxx #1 For the record, on the copy that I own all the red is whatever that glow-in-the-dark ink is!

The Maxx #1

6. Moon Knight #56 I’m not totally sure why, but I was really into Stephen Platt’s work. I came across a bunch of Prophet books in my collection, but this cover was definitely my favorite.

Moon Knight #56

7. Catwoman #1 I recently saw a bunch of pictures on the internet of people with this tattoo. Catwoman does look pretty awesome here. Note: this cover is actually embossed (I’m starting to see a recurring trend here of 90s comics not being content with having only art on their covers.)

Catwoman #1

8. Spawn #1 My love for Spawn dwindled pretty quickly, but I always appreciated Todd McFarlane’s creative vision and artwork.

Spawn #1

9. Green Lantern #163 Very classic cover for a character I’ve never really been that into. There’s something really great about the composition here, as well.

Green Lantern #163

10. Silver Surfer #1 I like that this cover simply says: “Hey, Universe! It’s the Silver Surfer here. I’m ready to TCB.”

Silver Surfer #1

Stephen Platt! haha yeah I was into him for a sec too. Platt and Tony Daniel were so “edgy” to me back then.
