10 of my favorite comic book covers

Wolverine #1When I started reading comic books again three years ago (after a 12-year hiatus), I promised myself I wouldn’t get back into collecting single issues and would only buy trade paperbacks. It just didn’t seem financially reasonable to pay $4 per issue and I had so much reading to catch up on that it only made sense to read trades. The one thing I really do miss about buying single issues was getting to check out each new cover when going to the comic book shop! So, I thought it’d be fun to go back through my totally random comic collection that has sat in boxes since the early 90s and try to pick out some of my favorite covers from back in the day. Check out the list after the jump.

1. Wolverine #1 Everyone loves Wolverine and this cover is a perfect representation of what Wolvie’s all about: being a bad-ass.

2. Marvels #1 Seeing Alex Ross’ artwork for the first time in this collection totally blew my mind.

Marvels

3. Superman (vol. 2) #75 I, of course, do not have my copy of this still in the sealed black sleeve. But, if I did, I’d be missing out on this awesome cover! Look at that cape. Brutal.

Death of Superman

4. X-Factor #24 Archangel has always been one of my favorites. Also, I love the composition of the characters on the page here.

X Factor #24

5. The Maxx #1 For the record, on the copy that I own all the red is whatever that glow-in-the-dark ink is!

The Maxx #1

6. Moon Knight #56 I’m not totally sure why, but I was really into Stephen Platt’s work. I came across a bunch of Prophet books in my collection, but this cover was definitely my favorite.

Moon Knight #56

7. Catwoman #1 I recently saw a bunch of pictures on the internet of people with this tattoo. Catwoman does look pretty awesome here. Note: this cover is actually embossed (I’m starting to see a recurring trend here of 90s comics not being content with having only art on their covers.)

Catwoman #1

8. Spawn #1 My love for Spawn dwindled pretty quickly, but I always appreciated Todd McFarlane’s creative vision and artwork.

Spawn #1

9. Green Lantern #163 Very classic cover for a character I’ve never really been that into. There’s something really great about the composition here, as well.

Green Lantern #163

10. Silver Surfer #1 I like that this cover simply says: “Hey, Universe! It’s the Silver Surfer here. I’m ready to TCB.”

Stephen Platt! haha yeah I was into him for a sec too. Platt and Tony Daniel were so “edgy” to me back then.

I have that first Limited Edition Set of Wolverine, all in perfect Mint – Also, the first 25 1988 Wolvering series including The Gehenna Stone Affair. I dug Mark Texiera, he was the best Wolvie artist, he mostly did covers, but he did several limited series, I have his “Sabretooth” limited Series. I always thought Tyler Mane got eh image of Sabretooth DOWN more than Liv “Tyler”Screiber although Liv is a great character actor – If Liv had originally done Sabretooth, and the madse him up like Tyler Mane to maych the comic look. that would have been great.

I always thought the Xmen moovies never followed the best of the X-Men storylines, especially the issue of Wolverine right be fore Age of Apacylipse, where Wolvering Finally “popped that third claw” (You remember how Wolvie used to like to frame Sabretooth’s face between his two outter claws, he finally popped the 3rd one right into Victor Creed’s BRAIN! hehe).

I have that MARVELS Graphicx Novel in Hard Book Form, along with Ruins and DC’s Kingdom Come which was my absolute favourite alternate-timelione Superman story.

I have a lot of 90′s issues, some 70′s and some hard to find issues, and a lot of Signed issues by Legends. Maybe we can swap a few – I am missing Wolverine 138, I think that is the number, it was right after it was revealed that Sabretoioth had been given Adamantium, and the last Frame oif the zine shows Sabretooth, Pryde, and Logan fallingf into the hold of a ship run by The Hand. I never was able to get the very next issue, it sold out before I even got to the comix store, went to 50 stores and nobody had it,m whatever that issue was, and I suspect Wolvie getting his Adamantium “Teeth” back, it was long gone before I could get my issue.
