I used the Reenie Beanie font on some of the headers throughout my site. I initially was using it on more text, but quickly realized that getting too crazy with some of these fonts could result in very unreadable text. So, while this new free resource is very cool, best usability practices should still be kept in mind when designing your site!

Has anyone seen any other websites integrating these fonts?

It just didn’t seem financially reasonable to pay $4 per issue and I had so much reading to catch up on that it only made sense to read trades. The one thing I really do miss about buying single issues was getting to check out each new cover when going to the comic book shop! So, I thought it’d be fun to go back through my totally random comic collection that has sat in boxes since the early 90s and try to pick out some of my favorite covers from back in the day. Check out the list after the jump.

1. Wolverine #1 Everyone loves Wolverine and this cover is a perfect representation of what Wolvie’s all about: being a bad-ass.

2. Marvels #1 Seeing Alex Ross’ artwork for the first time in this collection totally blew my mind.

3. Superman (vol. 2) #75 I, of course, do not have my copy of this still in the sealed black sleeve. But, if I did, I’d be missing out on this awesome cover! Look at that cape. Brutal.

4. X-Factor #24 Archangel has always been one of my favorites. Also, I love the composition of the characters on the page here.

5. The Maxx #1 For the record, on the copy that I own all the red is whatever that glow-in-the-dark ink is!

6. Moon Knight #56 I’m not totally sure why, but I was really into Stephen Platt’s work. I came across a bunch of Prophet books in my collection, but this cover was definitely my favorite.

7. Catwoman #1 I recently saw a bunch of pictures on the internet of people with this tattoo. Catwoman does look pretty awesome here. Note: this cover is actually embossed (I’m starting to see a recurring trend here of 90s comics not being content with having only art on their covers.)

8. Spawn #1 My love for Spawn dwindled pretty quickly, but I always appreciated Todd McFarlane’s creative vision and artwork.

9. Green Lantern #163 Very classic cover for a character I’ve never really been that into. There’s something really great about the composition here, as well.

10. Silver Surfer #1 I like that this cover simply says: “Hey, Universe! It’s the Silver Surfer here. I’m ready to TCB.”

In the past, this usually started with some dry erase markers on a whiteboard and then I would recreate those drawings using Photoshop. This is not always the fastest and most efficient way to work. My friend @schusterbauer, however, recently introduced me to Mockingbird, an online wireframing application, and it has completely changed the way I work.

Mockingbird’s simple UI and library of web elements makes it easy to rapidly mock up your designs and outline the basic functionality of the site or application. The user’s ability to quickly update the mock ups make it an ideal tool for brainstorming and “sharing” your projects is a great way to collaborate and get feedback from clients. I would highly recommend using this tool to anyone!

Other wireframing tools worth checking out are Hot Gloo and Balsamiq. Are there any others worth checking out?

I have to admit that I don’t really get into the winter Olympics, but this year I find myself incredibly dedicated to the sport of curling. And it’s not just me! Anytime I’ve been out to a restaurant or bar in the past week, there are always people with their eyes glued to the tv if curling is on. Last Friday we had a huge group of people cheering on the women of Denmark as they battled the Canadians. Denmark lost. Here are some of the reasons I’ve come to love the beautiful sport of curling:

1. The women. Make sure you pick up a calendar.

2. The mens’ accuracy is unbelievable. So fun to watch and very impressive!

3. I love how there’s no referee standing on the ice with the players keeping score. They keep each other honest and, once the players know the outcome, they just clear the ice themselves immediately. It’s like when you’re playing euchre and one player has the last two highest trump and everyone just kinda throws their cards on the table.

4. Great accessories! The brooms… the gliding shoes… the shiny, polished massive stones. I love ‘em all.

5. Each game is made up of “ends.” That’s awesome.

Check out the results and the remaining schedule here.

The first class I took as a freshman at Kalamazoo College was a writing seminar that focused on art and art history. I’m not entirely sure how I ended up in it, but I immediately fell in love with looking at art. Even though I went on to be a Studio Art major, I took a ton of art history classes, which pretty much involved sitting in the dark looking at hundreds and hundreds of slides. While this experience truly started me on my creative career path, there is nothing that compares to seeing certain pieces of art in person. Below are the five most inspiring artworks that I have had the pleasure of seeing in the flesh:

1. The Old Guitarist, 1903, Pablo Picasso, Art Institute of Chicago

This has always been one of my favorites and I’ve probably seen it over a dozen times in person. It must be the Elliott Smith vibe that draws me to it. See the rest after the jump.

2. Number VII from Eight Studies for a Portrait, 1953, Francis Bacon, MoMA, New York

Francis Bacon’s work is ever more jarring up close and personal!

3. The Joy of Life, 1905-06, Henri Matisse, The Barnes Foundation, Merion, PA

It may have been the fact that this painting had been sequestered in the Barnes Foundation for decades that made it so incredible to see.

4. Christina’s World, 1948, Andrew Wyeth, MoMA, New York

I visited the MoMA in NYC for the first time last Fall and I couldn’t get over all the incredible modern art in its collection. The piece that had the most unexpected effect on me was this Wyeth painting. I honestly had never really been a Wyeth fan, but, when I turned the corner and met this face to face, I was speechless. You can’t help but feel the desperation of Christina as your drawn into that field with her. It also doesn’t hurt that my favorite comic book ever, Preacher, pays homage to this incredible painting.

5. Bicycle Wheel, 1951, Marcel Duchamp, MoMA, New York

I don’t think I ever appreciated Duchamp’s work until seeing this piece. Both fine artists and musicians get a bonus for changing the course of their respective fields, and Duchamp’s readymades changed modern art. His work keeps all creatives asking themselves “What is art?”
