I am a total sucker for holiday music. It is so cheesy, but it’s such a great way to set the mood for such a great time of the year! While I enjoy the classics and being able to turn on the radio to a station that plays them 24/7, this year won’t be the same without the woxy Holiday Mixer. So, I guess I’ll have to make some extra effort this season to ensure that I get to listen to my favorite traditional and non-traditional holiday jams. Below are my favorite five. What are yours?!

Earlier this year, I wrote a blog post about my 10 favorite comic book covers from my original collection. My collection grew not long after that when I purchased every issue of the Preacher series off ebay. Preacher originally ran from 1995-2000 and it included 66 issues (plus 5 specials and a 4-issue miniseries). This series has easily become my favorite comic that I have read. One of the best parts of these books is the amazing cover art that was created by Glenn Fabry for each issue (all the covers are not even included in the trade paperbacks). My top 5 favorite covers are after the jump.

Over the last few years we have seen less and less tours come through Detroit. I can only assume that bands decide to skip Michigan, because they assume people here do not have money to spend on merchandise (they are kinda right). Things seem to be changing this fall, however; these are all the shows that I am interested in seeing that are scheduled in the next few months:

UPDATE: AIGA Detroit posted my review on their blog. Neat!
Last week I had the pleasure of attending a talk, entitled “Tall Tales From A Large Man,” given by designer and entrepreneur Aaron Draplin. Draplin is a Michigan native, but now resides in the Pacific Northwest where he runs his very successful design firm Draplin Design Co. I hate to admit it, but I was not too familiar with Mr. Draplin’s amazing catalog of work until my buddy Nate clued me in. After watching this video and browsing through his portfolio, I knew this talk was something I could not miss.

I just returned from a week-long trip out west, where I made stops in Denver, CO and San Diego, CA. When I was staying in Denver, I made sure the visit the newly-renovated Denver Art Museum. I did not really know much about their permanent Modern and Contemporary Art collection, but was blown away when I came across Sandy Skoglund’s installation Fox Games:
The installation depicts an invasion of gray foxes, sculpted in clay and cast in polyester resin, within a restaurant. The foxes prowl on and around red tables in an entirely red room. Every element of the installation—forks, knives, plates, dinner rolls, and even a squirrel in the mouth of one of the foxes—is painted red.

Earlier this year, Google introduced the Google Font Directory, which offers users a selection of open source fonts to use online as web-friendly fonts. I finally set aside some time to find out more about it… only to realize that it takes about 5 minutes to integrate the fonts into your site! I used the Reenie Beanie font on some of the headers throughout my site. I initially was using it on more text, but quickly realized that getting too crazy with some of these fonts could result in very unreadable text. So, while this new free resource is very cool, best usability practices should still be kept in mind when designing your site!
Has anyone seen any other websites integrating these fonts?

When I started reading comic books again three years ago (after a 12-year hiatus), I promised myself I wouldn’t get back into collecting single issues and would only buy trade paperbacks. It just didn’t seem financially reasonable to pay $4 per issue and I had so much reading to catch up on that it only made sense to read trades. The one thing I really do miss about buying single issues was getting to check out each new cover when going to the comic book shop! So, I thought it’d be fun to go back through my totally random comic collection that has sat in boxes since the early 90s and try to pick out some of my favorite covers from back in the day. Check out the list after the jump. Read more…
